Sony loses 10% each PS3 Sold!

Sony Tokyo earnings loses 10% of the cost of each Playstation 3 it sells.

Sony’s CFO Oneda Nobuyuki said that the company has further cost savings in store for the system, a bad news for Sony, and a good news for people who did buy this console, thus this console means that the PS3 is more powerful than you think it is if it is expensive for you.

Oneda also said at the earnings conference that Sony has further cost savings in store for the system. He did not comment on the possibility of a price drop.

Oneda also said that low PSP software sales, noting that the system’s attach rate is lower than hardware from other companies and that increased hardware sales is not leading to a similar increase for software sales.

hhmm… I think it’s feel much more like a marketing gimic. Why would you do a business without making a profit? I think they earn from other part of the gaming industry. Say.. gaming license? In-game advertisements? It all depends..

It’s just like McDonalds running on a discount campaign. Nothing different.

It doesn’t look like it makes sense if you take into account ONLY the PS3. However, when you consider other things like making up the losses on games (I think it’s safe to assume most people who fork over $300 for a game console will buy at least several games for it).

Another, not as well publicized factor is that the PS3 has a built-in Blu-Ray player. When the format war (HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray) was in full swing, the PS3 came out and ended up putting about ten times as many Blu-Ray players than HD-DVD players in your average household. Thus Blu-Ray (which is also owned by Sony) basically won itself a tidy little monopoly on the next generation media format…and all the profit it entails.
